Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1: Departure from Columbus, Ohio
The journey begins with an overnight flight to Lisbon, Portugal, setting the stage for an immersive and enriching experience.
Day 2: Arrival in Lisbon & Introduction to Portuguese Culture
Upon arrival in Lisbon, the group will transfer to the city center and kick off the adventure with an orientation walking tour, offering a first glimpse of the city’s historic charm. After checking into the hotel and settling in, the evening will conclude with a warm welcome dinner, where students will enjoy traditional Portuguese cuisine and an overview of the journey ahead.
Day 3: Lisbon – History & Innovation
The day begins with a guided walking tour through Lisbon’s oldest district, Alfama, known for its narrow streets and stunning views. The exploration continues with visits to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Belém Tower and the Jerónimos Monastery, both emblematic of Portugal’s Age of Exploration. In the afternoon, the group will visit the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, home to a world-class collection of art and artifacts. A hands-on Azulejo tile-painting workshop will allow students to engage in one of Portugal’s most iconic artistic traditions. The evening will wrap up with a group dinner featuring Bacalhau à Brás, a beloved Portuguese dish.
Day 4: Day Trip to Sintra – Fairytale Castles & Coastal Views
A day trip to Sintra offers a magical experience in a town known for its lush landscapes and fairytale-like palaces. The group will explore the magnificent Pena Palace, a colorful hilltop masterpiece with breathtaking views. From there, the journey continues to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe, where the dramatic cliffs meet the Atlantic Ocean. After returning to Lisbon, the group will enjoy dinner together, reflecting on the day’s stunning sights.
Please note, your group will attend Mass on Day 3 or Day 4 - day and time will be confirmed closer to your departure.
Day 5: Lisbon to Porto – The Heart of the North
The morning begins with a transfer to Porto, Portugal’s second-largest city, known for its picturesque riverfront and historic charm. Upon arrival, a guided walking tour will introduce the group to Ribeira, Porto’s colorful riverside district, and the striking Dom Luís I Bridge. The day continues with a visit to Livraria Lello, one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world and an inspiration for literary enthusiasts. The evening is free for independent exploration and enjoying Porto’s vibrant café culture.
Day 6: Exploring Porto & the Douro Valley
The morning begins with a visit to the Palácio da Bolsa, a stunning 19th-century neoclassical building that once served as the city’s stock exchange. The afternoon is free to explore Porto’s charming streets, browse local markets, or relax in a café along the Douro River. As night falls, the group will join in the city’s New Year’s Eve celebrations, enjoying fireworks over the river and embracing the energy of Porto’s festive atmosphere.
Day 7: Porto to the Algarve – Coastal Beauty
After a morning transfer, the group will arrive in the Algarve, Portugal’s southern coastal region known for its dramatic cliffs and golden beaches. A stop in Lagos will provide insight into the area’s maritime history before continuing to Praia da Marinha, one of Europe’s most breathtaking beaches. The day ends with a stunning sunset at Ponta da Piedade, where rock formations and sea caves create a postcard-worthy landscape
Day 8: Algarve – Culture & Adventure
The morning will be spent in Silves, a medieval town rich in Moorish history, where the group will explore its well-preserved castle. The afternoon offers free time to wander through local markets, browse artisan shops, or relax in one of the Algarve’s charming coastal villages. In the evening, the group will gather for a traditional Algarvian dinner, featuring Cataplana de Marisco, a flavorful seafood stew that highlights the region’s culinary heritage.
Day 9: Return to Lisbon – Farewell Dinner
The journey back to Lisbon provides one last opportunity to take in Portugal’s diverse landscapes. Upon arrival, participants will have free time for last-minute souvenir shopping, personal exploration, or revisiting favorite spots from earlier in the trip. The evening attend Mass before attending a farewell dinner, celebrating the experiences and connections made throughout the journey.
Day 10: Departure for Columbus
After an enriching 10-day adventure through Portugal, the group will transfer to Lisbon Airport for the return flight home, bringing back unforgettable memories and a deeper appreciation for Portugal’s history, culture, and landscapes.
