Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Flight to Costa Rica

Your journey begins as you depart for San José, the vibrant capital of Costa Rica and the gateway to the country’s rich culture and biodiversity. Upon arrival, meet your local Program Director and transfer to your hotel.

Head out on an orientation walk through the city, where you’ll begin to notice the blend of Spanish colonial influence and modern Costa Rican life. Learn about the country’s commitment to sustainability, education, and conservation, values that will shape your experience throughout your week in Costa Rica.

In the evening, gather for a welcome dinner, and learn more about the week ahead!

Day 2: Arenal Volcano & La Fortuna

Travel north to La Fortuna, a town nestled at the base of the iconic Arenal Volcano, one of Costa Rica’s most recognizable natural landmarks.

Begin your exploration in Arenal Volcano National Park, where you’ll learn about the volcano’s history, past eruptions, and the way volcanic activity has shaped the surrounding ecosystem. Walk through lava fields and rainforest trails while discussing biodiversity and conservation efforts in the region.

Continue to La Fortuna Waterfall, where a short hike leads you through dense jungle to a dramatic cascade dropping into a turquoise pool below.

In the evening, relax in natural hot springs heated by geothermal energy from deep within the earth, a perfect opportunity for reflecting on the day’s discoveries.

Day 3: Wildlife in Caño Negro

Today offers a deeper look into Costa Rica’s extraordinary biodiversity as you travel to the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge, a protected wetland area near the Nicaraguan border.

Board a riverboat and cruise along the Rio Frio, one of the best places in the country for wildlife observation. As you glide through the waterways, your guide will help identify species such as howler monkeys, caimans, sloths, iguanas, and an impressive variety of birdlife, including herons, kingfishers, and migratory species.

This immersive experience provides a hands-on understanding of ecosystems, food chains, and the importance of conservation in one of the most biologically rich regions in Central America.

Day 4: Into the Monteverde Cloud Forest

Begin the day with a horseback ride through the countryside, offering a glimpse into Costa Rica’s agricultural traditions and rural life. Along the way, learn about local crops, farming techniques, and how communities interact with the land.

Continue your journey to Monteverde, a region famous for its cloud forest—a rare ecosystem where low-lying clouds create a cool, misty environment that supports unique plant and animal life.

En route, visit a local school for a meaningful cultural exchange. Spend time connecting with Costa Rican students through games, conversation, and shared activities, gaining insight into daily life, education, and community in Costa Rica.

Day 5: Cloud Forest & Canopy Adventure

Explore the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, one of the most studied ecosystems in the world. As you walk through the forest, your guide will point out rare plants, towering trees, and wildlife adapted to this unique climate. Keep an eye out for colorful birds and other elusive species that thrive in this environment.

In the afternoon, take part in a canopy zip-line adventure, soaring through the treetops and experiencing the forest from a completely different perspective. This thrilling activity also highlights conservation efforts and sustainable tourism practices in the region.

Later, join a hands-on cooking class where you’ll prepare traditional Costa Rican dishes using fresh, local ingredients. Learn about the cultural significance of the cuisine and enjoy the meal you’ve created together.

Day 6: Community Connection & Return to San José via Sarchí

Begin the day with a meaningful visit to a local orphanage, where you’ll spend time with children through games, conversation, and shared activities. This experience offers a chance to connect on with the children, gain perspective, and better understand the role of community support systems in Costa Rica.

Afterward, depart Monteverde and travel through the scenic highlands toward San José.

Stop in the artisan town of Sarchí, known for its vibrant hand-painted crafts and traditional oxcarts, an enduring symbol of Costa Rican heritage. Spend time browsing local markets and shops filled with handcrafted goods, from painted souvenirs to woodwork and textiles, an ideal place to support local artisans and pick up a souvenier.

Continue to San José, arriving in the evening. Upon arrival, gather for a final farewell dinner, celebrating an unforgettable week of adventure, cultural connection, and shared experiences.

Day 7: Departure

Transfer to the airport for your flight home. As your journey comes to an end, carry with you not only unforgettable memories, but also a deeper understanding of Costa Rica’s culture, environment, and commitment to sustainability.
