Day 1: Departure from Boston

Your adventure begins as you check in for your international flight from Boston to Cape Town, South Africa. Settle in, and get ready for an unforgettable journey filled with breathtaking landscapes, incredible wildlife, meaningful cultural connections, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Day 2: Arrival in Cape Town

Welcome to South Africa! Upon arrival at Cape Town International Airport, you’ll be greeted by your local Program Director and guide who will be with you throughout your stay. As you make your way into the city, take in your first views of the dramatic coastline and iconic mountains surrounding Cape Town. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner with your group featuring local South African flavors before settling into your accommodations. Overnight in Cape Town.

Day 3: Cape Town City Highlights, Bo-Kaap Cooking Experience & Table Mountain

Start your day with a scenic cable car ride up Table Mountain, one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature. From the summit, take in spectacular panoramic views of Cape Town, the Atlantic Ocean, Robben Island, and the surrounding mountains stretching into the distance. Back in the city, enjoy a guided orientation tour through central Cape Town, where colonial architecture, colorful neighborhoods, and modern city life come together.

Later, explore the bustling Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, filled with waterfront restaurants, local markets, street performers, and incredible harbor views beneath Table Mountain. Overnight in Cape Town.

Day 4: Cape Peninsula Adventure

Set out on an unforgettable full-day journey along the spectacular Cape Peninsula. Travel the world-famous Chapman’s Peak Drive, where towering cliffs plunge dramatically into the Atlantic Ocean and breathtaking viewpoints seem to appear around every turn. Pass through charming seaside villages like Fish Hoek and Simon’s Town as you make your way toward the legendary Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve.

Explore rugged coastal trails, dramatic cliffs, and windswept beaches at one of the most famous landmarks in Africa, long believed by early explorers to be the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Enjoy a seafood lunch overlooking the harbor in Simon’s Town before heading to Boulders Beach for an unforgettable kayaking adventure alongside a colony of endangered African penguins. Paddle through crystal-clear waters while surrounded by massive granite boulders and stunning coastal scenery before returning to Cape Town for the evening. Overnight in Cape Town.

Day 5: Community Engagement in Cape Town

Spend the day immersed in a meaningful community engagement experience in Cape Town. Depending on local needs and ongoing projects, students may assist with youth programs, participate in environmental initiatives, support local schools, or work alongside community organizations focused on empowerment and development.

This hands-on experience provides an opportunity to connect directly with local residents, hear personal stories, and gain a deeper understanding of both the opportunities and challenges facing many South African communities today. More than just volunteering, this day is about building genuine human connections, learning from one another, and experiencing the warmth and resilience that define the spirit of South Africa. Overnight in Cape Town.

Day 6: Robben Island & Bo-Kaap Cooking Experience

This morning, board a ferry across Table Bay to Robben Island, one of South Africa’s most powerful and important historical sites. Best known as the prison where Nelson Mandela was held for 18 years during apartheid, the island stands today as a symbol of resilience, freedom, and the triumph of democracy over oppression.

Guided by former political prisoners and local historians, walk through the prison grounds, visit Mandela’s small prison cell, and hear firsthand stories about life during apartheid and South Africa’s long struggle for equality. The experience offers an incredibly moving and personal look into one of the defining chapters of modern history.

After returning to Cape Town, visit the vibrant Bo-Kaap neighborhood, famous for its brightly painted homes, cobblestone streets, and rich Cape Malay culture. While there, participate in a hands-on Cape Malay cooking class led by local residents, where you’ll learn how to prepare traditional dishes using fragrant spices and recipes passed down through generations. Beyond the food itself, the experience offers a meaningful opportunity to connect with local families and gain deeper insight into the history and traditions that make Bo-Kaap one of Cape Town’s most unique communities

Day 7: Cape Town → Karongwe Game Reserve

This morning, transfer to Cape Town Airport for your domestic flight to Hoedspruit, gateway to South Africa’s famous safari region. Upon arrival, continue to Shiduli Safari Lodge in the stunning Karongwe Private Game Reserve, where the African bush stretches endlessly across the horizon.

After settling into the lodge and enjoying lunch, set out on your very first open-vehicle safari game drive. Accompanied by expert rangers and trackers, venture deep into the reserve in search of elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, rhinos, and countless other species that call this wilderness home. As the sun begins to set over the savanna, experience the magic of the African bush coming alive at dusk before returning to the lodge for dinner under the stars.

Day 8: Safari & Community Engagement

Rise early for a sunrise safari game drive, one of the best times of day to spot wildlife as the bush awakens with activity. Watch for herds of elephants crossing the landscape, giraffes browsing through acacia trees, and predators returning from their nighttime hunts.

Later, visit a nearby village and local school for a meaningful cultural exchange experience. Spend time connecting with students and community members while learning about daily life, education, traditions, and local culture in rural South Africa. In the afternoon, return to the reserve for another exciting safari experience as your guides help track wildlife across the reserve’s diverse ecosystems. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 9: Anti-Poaching & Safari Experience

Begin the day with another early morning safari drive before diving deeper into one of Africa’s most important conservation challenges: protecting endangered wildlife from poaching.

Today, join the Karongwe Anti-Poaching Unit for a fascinating behind-the-scenes conservation experience, including meeting the legendary Black Mambas — South Africa’s groundbreaking all-female anti-poaching team. Learn how rangers monitor and protect endangered animals such as rhinos, the technology and training used in conservation efforts, and the critical role local communities play in protecting wildlife for future generations.

After lunch at the lodge, head back into the reserve for another unforgettable afternoon game drive, offering one final chance to experience the thrill of spotting wildlife in its natural habitat. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 10: Safari & Departure

Your final day in South Africa begins with one last sunrise game drive through the reserve, soaking in the sights and sounds of the African wilderness one final time. After breakfast at the lodge, transfer to Hoedspruit Airport for your domestic flight to Johannesburg, where you’ll connect with your overnight international flight back to Boston.
