Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Departure Day!

Your journey to Japan begins as you depart with your group, setting off for an unforgettable experience in one of the world’s most fascinating countries. Over the coming days, you’ll explore a culture where ancient traditions and cutting-edge innovation exist side by side—through food, art, technology, and daily life.

Day 2: Arrival in Tokyo

Arrive in Tokyo and meet your Program Director before transferring into the city. After settling in, head out on an evening orientation walk to begin experiencing the energy of Tokyo—neon lights, bustling intersections, and an unmatched sense of movement and precision.

Along the way, you’ll begin to notice the subtle cultural details that define Japan, from etiquette and cleanliness to the rhythm of daily life. Enjoy a welcome dinner together and your first introduction to authentic Japanese cuisine.

Day 3: Meiji Shrine, Taiko Drumming & Harajuku

Begin your day at Meiji Shrine, a peaceful Shinto shrine dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. Walking through towering torii gates and forested pathways, you’ll gain insight into Japan’s spiritual traditions and the role of Shintoism in everyday life.

Next, take part in a hands-on Taiko drumming workshop. Learn the fundamentals of rhythm, movement, and coordination while experiencing the power and discipline behind this centuries-old performance art. This is not just music—it’s teamwork, focus, and cultural expression.

Continue to Harajuku, Tokyo’s hub of youth culture and creativity. Explore vibrant streets filled with bold fashion, unique boutiques, and themed cafés, offering a look into how Japan’s younger generations express identity and creativity.

Day 4: Choice Day – Tokyo Disneyland or Ghibli Museum

Today offers the opportunity to explore one of two distinctly different sides of Japanese culture.

At Tokyo Disneyland, experience world-class attractions and entertainment, with a uniquely Japanese attention to detail, hospitality, and guest experience that sets it apart from parks around the world.

Alternatively, visit the Ghibli Museum, where the magic of storytelling and animation comes to life. Through immersive exhibits, original artwork, and interactive displays, you’ll gain insight into the creative process behind some of Japan’s most beloved films and the global impact of Studio Ghibli.

Day 5: Imperial History, Food Culture & Anime Exploration

Start the day at the Imperial Palace East Gardens, once part of Edo Castle, where you’ll explore beautifully preserved grounds and learn about Japan’s imperial history and transition from feudal society to modern nation.

Continue to Tsukiji Outer Market, one of the most famous food markets in the world. As you walk through narrow lanes filled with vendors, you’ll sample fresh sushi and local specialties while learning about Japan’s deep connection to food, seasonality, and craftsmanship.

In the afternoon, dive into the world of anime and gaming in Akihabara. Visit iconic destinations like the Pokémon Center and Nintendo Store, explore multi-level anime shops, and experience themed cafés that reflect Japan’s global influence on pop culture and entertainment.

Day 6: Hakone & Mt. Fuji Region

Travel to the Hakone region, known for its natural beauty and views of Mt. Fuji, Japan’s most iconic symbol.

Cruise across Lake Ashi, formed in the crater of an ancient volcano, while taking in scenic views of the surrounding mountains. Then ride the Hakone Ropeway over the volcanic Owakudani Valley, where you’ll observe geothermal activity and learn about the region’s volcanic history.

For those interested, experience a traditional onsen—Japan’s famous hot spring bathing culture—an important part of relaxation, wellness, and social tradition in Japanese life. (this can be arranged on program for an additional cost).

Day 7: Bullet Train to Kyoto & Arashiyama

Board the Shinkansen (Bullet Train), one of the most advanced rail systems in the world. As you travel at high speeds across the country, you’ll experience firsthand Japan’s commitment to innovation, efficiency, and design.

Arrive in Kyoto, the cultural heart of Japan, and visit the breathtaking Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. Walking through towering bamboo groves, you’ll experience one of Japan’s most iconic and serene landscapes.

In the evening, explore the historic Gion district, known for its preserved wooden buildings and connection to traditional arts. This area offers a glimpse into Japan’s past and its continued respect for heritage.

Day 8: Calligraphy, Culture & Tea Ceremony

Begin the day with a Japanese calligraphy workshop, learning how brush, ink, and movement come together to form this traditional art. As you practice, you’ll gain an appreciation for the patience, precision, and mindfulness required.

Enjoy time to explore local markets and shops, with the opportunity to purchase traditional attire such as a yukata or kimono—connecting fashion with cultural identity.

In the afternoon, participate in a traditional tea ceremony. This experience goes beyond drinking tea—it’s a carefully choreographed ritual rooted in respect, simplicity, and mindfulness, offering insight into Japanese philosophy and daily life.

Day 9: Kyoto’s Historic Landmarks

Visit Kyoto Imperial Palace, once home to Japan’s emperors, and explore Nijo Castle, known for its “nightingale floors” and connection to the Tokugawa shogunate.

Continue to Fushimi Inari Shrine, famous for its thousands of vibrant red torii gates. Walk along the winding trails that lead into the forested hills, experiencing one of Japan’s most recognizable and symbolic sites.

Day 10: Cultural Exchange

Spend the day connecting with local girl scouts through a cultural exchange experience. Through shared activities, conversations, and collaboration, you’ll gain meaningful insight into daily life, education, and youth culture in Japan. This experience offers a unique opportunity to build global connections, practice communication skills, and see firsthand both the similarities and differences between cultures.

Day 11: Day Trip to Nara

Travel to Nara, Japan’s first capital and home to some of its most significant cultural treasures.

Visit Todai-ji Temple, where you’ll stand before the Great Buddha—one of the largest bronze statues in the world—and learn about its historical and spiritual significance.

Explore Nara Park, where friendly deer roam freely and are considered messengers of the gods in Shinto belief. This interaction offers a memorable and uniquely Japanese experience.

Day 12: Hiroshima & Miyajima

Take the Bullet Train to Hiroshima and visit the Peace Memorial Park and Museum. Through powerful exhibits and personal stories, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the events of World War II and the importance of peace and global responsibility.

Continue to Miyajima Island to see the iconic floating torii gate, which appears to rise from the water at high tide. This sacred site reflects Japan’s connection between nature and spirituality.

Day 13: Osaka Exploration & Farewell

Visit Osaka Castle, one of Japan’s most important historical landmarks, and learn about its role in the unification of Japan.

Participate in a hands-on cooking class, where you’ll learn to prepare traditional dishes such as sushi or ramen. Guided by local chefs, you’ll gain insight into culinary techniques and the cultural importance of food.

Explore the vibrant districts of Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi, known for their energy, street food, and neon-lit streets—offering a final look at Japan’s modern urban culture.

Celebrate your journey with a farewell dinner, reflecting on the experiences, growth, and friendships formed along the way.

Day 14: Departure

Depart Japan with unforgettable memories, new perspectives, and a deeper appreciation for a culture that blends tradition, innovation, and creativity in extraordinary ways.
