Day by Day Itinerary
This immersive program is designed for students eager to dive into China’s rich history, culture, and daily life through interactive, hands-on experiences that bring the country’s unique traditions to life.
Day 1: Departure Day
Your adventure begins as you board an overnight flight to Beijing, China.
Day 2: Arrival in Beijing
Upon arrival, you’ll meet your travel director and head to your hotel to settle in. That evening, you’ll gather for a traditional Peking Duck welcome dinner, getting a first taste of Chinese culture.
Day 3: Exploring Beijing’s Past and Present
Today, start exploring Beijing’s vibrant culture and history, beginning with visits to Tiananmen Square and the National Performing Arts Center, known as “The Egg.” Step into the Forbidden City, a magnificent palace once home to Ming and Qing emperors. After lunch, hop on a pedicab to tour traditional hutong neighborhoods, meeting local families and hearing their stories. End the day sampling street food at the bustling Wangfujing Pedestrian Street.
Day 4: Ancient Rituals and The Great Wall
At the Temple of Heaven, you’ll witness locals practicing Tai Chi and Qigong, then join in on a lesson with Chinese students at a nearby high school, sharing lunch and conversation. Later, hike the Great Wall at Mutianyu, an awe-inspiring section of this ancient wonder, followed by dinner and a Kung Fu performance by young martial arts students.
Day 5: Imperial Retreat and Overnight Train to Xi’an
Visit the Summer Palace, the emperor’s lakeside retreat, where you’ll explore its gardens and admire 8,000 intricately painted beams. After lunch, wander Peking University’s historic campus and browse a local electronics market. In the evening, board an overnight train bound for Xi’an.
Day 6: Discovering Xi’an’s Silk Road Legacy
Wake up in Xi’an, the ancient gateway to the Silk Road. After breakfast, you’ll walk the city’s impressive walls before exploring its famous Bell Tower and the bustling Muslim Quarters, where you can taste unique snacks and interact with local vendors. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Xi’an dumpling dinner.
Day 7: The Terracotta Warriors and Calligraphy Workshop
Today, visit the Terracotta Warriors, where over 7,000 unique life-sized soldiers and horses await. Learn the story of their creation and excavation, then explore the Big Goose Pagoda and Xi’an Museum. Afterward, try your hand at a calligraphy lesson led by a local artist, learning the basics of this beautiful Chinese art form.
Day 8: Scenic Guilin and Cultural Immersion
Fly to Guilin, a city surrounded by stunning karst mountains. Travel to Longsheng to marvel at the Longji Rice Terraces, where you’ll learn from local villagers about their ancient farming practices and unique culture. Return to Guilin City for dinner and rest.
Day 9: Li River Cruise and Yangshuo Exploration
Begin your day with a scenic Li River Cruise, passing lush hills, rice paddies, and bamboo forests. After lunch in the historic town of Xingping, you’ll explore Fuli Old Town’s artisan shops and continue to Yangshuo for an evening surrounded by some of China’s most iconic landscapes.
Day 10: Outdoor Adventures in Yangshuo
Kick off the day with bamboo rafting along the tranquil Yulong River, then hike Moon Hill for sweeping views. Choose between exploring either Silver Cave or Dragon Water Cave, where you’ll discover ancient geological formations. Enjoy a relaxed afternoon and evening back in Yangshuo.
Day 11: Guilin’s Pandas and Feng Shui Tour, Flight to Shanghai
Spend a peaceful morning visiting the adorable giant pandas at Guilin’s Panda Garden. You’ll also explore the concept of feng shui at the Jingjiang Ming Tomb. After lunch, catch a flight to Shanghai, China’s bustling financial hub. Enjoy dinner, followed by a guided walking tour through the city’s vibrant neighborhoods.
Day 12: History, Culture, and Local Connections in Shanghai
Explore the famous Bund, lined with art deco architecture, followed by a walk through the classical Yuyuan Garden. After a Shanghai-style soup dumpling lunch, visit the Shanghai Museum and then connect with local high school students for a friendly game of soccer or basketball. Wrap up the day with a mesmerizing acrobatic performance.
Day 13: Hidden Histories and Farewell Dinner
Learn about Shanghai’s lesser-known history with a visit to the Moshe Ohel Synagogue, the Old Jewish Quarters, and the former French Concession. Enjoy a free afternoon for last-minute exploring before gathering for a farewell dinner of Shanghai cuisine, celebrating the friendships and experiences gained on this journey.
Day 14: Departure Day
It’s time to say goodbye as you board your flight back home, carrying unforgettable memories of China’s incredible landscapes, culture, and people.
