Day by Day Itinerary
12-Day Teen Travel Program: San José (1), San Carlos (2), Monteverde (2), Manuel Antonio (2) and Panama City (4)
Day 1: Flight to Costa Rica
Your journey to Costa Rica begins! Board your flight to San José, the vibrant capital of Costa Rica. Upon arrival, meet your local Travel Director and transfer to your hotel. In the afternoon, get to know the city on an orientation walk, discovering its rich colonial history and Spanish influences. Gather with your group in the evening for a welcome dinner, setting the stage for an unforgettable adventure.
Day 2: Exploring San Carlos
Leave San José behind as you travel to La Fortuna, a charming town near the iconic Arenal Volcano. Begin your day with an educational tour of Arenal Volcano National Park, learning about its geological significance and the surrounding rainforest ecosystem. Hike through lush trails to reach La Fortuna Waterfall, where the cascading water provides the perfect backdrop for group photos. End the day with a relaxing soak in natural hot springs, as you learn about the geothermal activity that makes this region unique.
Day 3: Wildlife Adventures in Caño Negro
This morning, journey north through the picturesque countryside, passing plantations of pineapple, sugar cane, and teak. Board a boat for a scenic cruise on the Rio Frio, leading to the renowned Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge. Spend the day spotting an array of wildlife, including howler monkeys, caimans, green iguanas, and colorful migratory birds such as roseate spoonbills and cormorants. It’s a hands-on biology lesson in one of Costa Rica’s most biodiverse regions.
Day 4: Into the Cloud Forest of Monteverde
Start your day with a horseback ride through the rolling hills of San Carlos, gaining insight into Costa Rica’s local agriculture and ecosystems. Then, head to Monteverde, home to one of the world’s most famous cloud forests. Along the way, visit a local school for a unique cultural exchange. Spend time with Costa Rican students, playing soccer, crafting, or even learning traditional dance, and discover what daily life is like for teens in Costa Rica.
Day 5: Cloud Forest Exploration and Zip Line Adventure
Dive into the wonders of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, where you’ll encounter unique plant and animal species like the resplendent quetzal, jaguars, and tapirs. In the afternoon, experience the thrill of the Monteverde Canopy Tour as you zip line through the treetops, taking in breathtaking views of the lush forest below. End the day with an interactive cooking class, where you’ll prepare and savor a traditional Costa Rican meal, learning about the ingredients and traditions behind the cuisine.
Day 6: Coastal Culture in Manuel Antonio
In the morning, visit a local orphanage to spend time with children, teaching them basic English and engaging in playful activities like dance and arts-and-crafts. After, head to Manuel Antonio on the stunning Pacific Coastline. Settle into your accommodations and enjoy free time at the beach, soaking up the vibrant coastal culture.
Day 7: Discovering Manuel Antonio National Park
Spend the day exploring Manuel Antonio National Park, one of Costa Rica’s most beautiful destinations. Hike through lush trails and observe the park’s incredible biodiversity, including playful Capuchin monkeys and vibrant tropical birds. Relax on the pristine beaches or take a swim in the turquoise waters, all while learning about conservation efforts to protect these coastal ecosystems.
Day 8: Crocodile Bridge and Fly to Panama
Begin your journey back to San José, with a stop at the famous Crocodile Bridge in Tarcoles. Here, observe the massive crocodiles that inhabit the river and learn about their behavior and habitats. In the evening, depart for Panama! This evening, enjoy a group dinner and orientation, learning about Panama’s fascinating history and culture.
Day 9 – The Panama Canal and Casco Viejo
Start the day with a visit to the Miraflores Locks of the Panama Canal. Witness this engineering marvel in action and learn about its pivotal role in global trade and Panama’s history. In the afternoon, explore Casco Viejo, Panama City’s historic district. Stroll through cobblestone streets, visit colonial landmarks, and discover the stories behind this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wrap up the day with a hands-on cultural activity, such as a traditional Panamanian dance workshop or cooking class featuring local dishes.
Day 10 – Panama’s Indigenous Culture
Travel to the Chagres National Park to visit an Embera Indigenous village. Arrive by traditional canoe and immerse yourself in the culture, traditions, and daily life of the Embera people. Participate in activities such as weaving, painting, or learning about medicinal plants, and enjoy a freshly prepared lunch made by the community.
Day 11 – Gatun Lake and Farewell Dinner
On your final day, embark on a memorable boat tour of Gatun Lake, a vast artificial lake integral to the Panama Canal’s operation. As you navigate its tranquil waters, you’ll have the opportunity to observe diverse wildlife, including monkeys, iguanas, and a variety of bird species, all set against the lush rainforest backdrop. Have picnic lunch on a secluded island within the lake, and later return for your farewell dinner!
Day 12 – Departure Day
Say goodbye to Panama as you transfer to the airport for your flight home. Return with unforgettable memories of your journey through Costa Rica and Panama, enriched by the vibrant cultures, natural beauty, and connections you’ve made along the way.
